Potential tenants looking for a new home and commercial real estate clients looking for a great investment come across new opportunities all of the time. Most people who are in the market for a new place to live try to find somewhere comfortable with all of the amenities they need, but it’s becoming more and more important that these homes are equipped with environmentally-friendly options to show that they care about the future of our planet. The following materials are being used to build and create new apartment buildings that are exciting to new tenants and investors.

Shipping containers

These large containers that are usually found on large cargo ships are no longer confined to the ocean. In recent years, these shipping containers have been repurposed to be used to put together homes, offices, even shopping centers because the materials are both relatively inexpensive and also environmentally-friendly. Across the United States, shipping containers are being given new life in the form of apartment buildings, many of which will be used as affordable housing because putting them together is more efficient than building a complex from scratch.

Hempcrete

Concrete is the go-to material when it comes to building structures, roadways, and bridges because of its versatility and reliability, but the environmental effects of binding cement and concrete are well documented. Since carbon emissions are released during the binding process, builders and planners have started to gravitate toward using a similar material called Hempcrete. Hempcrete is made using the inside of the hemp plant and is then mixed with a lime and sand mixture to create a concrete-like material. This bio-composite concrete can be used to make houses and buildings and is reusable and environmentally friendly. While it’s currently expensive to produce homes with this material in the United States because of the controversial plant that is used to create it, apartments and houses in the United Kingdom and other European countries have started building with HempCrete with major success.

Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing materials in the world, growing nearly 100 cm in 24 hours, making it a fantastic option for building a new apartment complex or home. Unlike other woods, bamboo only takes about 3 years of growth before it can be harvested to be used as a building material. It is also lightweight and water resistant, making it a great option for areas of the world that get a lot of rain. Bamboo is already used to make homes in parts of Asia, but the material is more and more prevalent in the United States as a viable option for construction.
